A beautiful, striking pictorial front cover and spine by French artist Paul Souze. Red cloth boards show wear, particularly on the blindstamped rear cover, which bears a small water stain. Top edge in gilt. Corners are bumped. Simple brown endpapers of a heavier paper stock. Marginalia on fly title leaf. Front hinge is cracked. Foxing is present throughout. Copious black and white illustrations throughout.

First published in 1872, Tartarin of Tarascon, the chief "cap-hunter" of his Provencal town, embarks on a series of misadventures that leave him a penniless, unlikely hero in his hometown.
