History: Salesman samples or dummy books were used by subscription publishers' agents to entice customers to agree to buy a copy in advance of delivery. This was a popular marketing tactic before and after the Civil War. Salesman samples from the 1800s usually included a portion of the book in a sample binding; spines or additional covers of available styles mounted inside the covers; a printed prospectus describing the virtues of the work or edition with recommendations from well-known persons. and blank forms on which the salesman entered the names, addresses, sometimes occupations, and the number of copies his subscribers agreed to purchase.

Condition: Some stains/rubbing/wear to covers. Binding is loose, but not cracked or broken. Floral endpapers. Two of the full page illustrations are detached; one is torn. Pages otherwise in good condition.
